Public holidays in India

Public Holidays in India: Full List of Central, State and Bank Holidays [Updated 2026]

Public holidays in India come from three different lists, and people mix them up every year. The central government notifies 17 gazetted holidays for its offices, each state notifies its own list, and banks follow the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list for their city. Mix them up and you plan a meeting on a closed day or miss a bank deadline. Use the list that matches your office, your state or your bank, and check the dates in the tables below.

Last updated: 22 October 2026. Every list on this page comes from a government notification or a government website. Festival dates that depend on the moon can move by a day between notifications. So the order for your office or state always decides.

Check today’s date against the central gazetted holiday table below. Your state may add its own holidays, so also check the state tables.

Key Rules to Know

  • Gazetted and restricted are different. A gazetted holiday closes government offices. A restricted holiday is optional: the employee picks from the list and the office stays open.
  • Three national dates. 26 January, 15 August and 2 October are holidays in every state. The RBI holiday listing marks 2 October as a Negotiable Instruments Act holiday for all its regional offices.
  • Each state sets its own list. The central list covers central government offices. However, states notify separate lists for their own offices, and the days differ, as the state tables below show.
  • Restricted holiday limits come from the order. The Assam notification lets each employee avail 2 restricted holidays in the year. Check the order that applies to you for the limit.
  • Dates can differ by a day. For example, the central list has Bakrid on 27 May, while Maharashtra has 28 May. Telangana has Ram Navami on 27 March, but the central list has 26 March. Holi is 4 March in the central list and 3 March in the Maharashtra and Telangana lists.
  • Weekend holidays stay on the weekend. A holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday keeps its date in these lists and does not move to a weekday.
  • Second and fourth Saturdays. The RBI listing states that all scheduled and non scheduled banks observe a holiday on the second and fourth Saturday. Assam also lists these Saturdays as government holidays.
  • Local holidays. The Assam notification lets District Commissioners declare one local holiday each, and the General Administration Department can add two more with the Chief Minister’s approval.
  • Private employers. A private company follows the holiday law of its state and its own policy. Holidays meant only for government offices do not bind a private employer, unless it chooses to adopt them.

Restricted Holidays (RH) in 2026

Restricted holidays (RH) let an employee take a day off for a festival that matters to them while the office stays open. The central list for 2026 has 34 restricted holidays. This is Annexure II of the same DoPT order.

Public Holidays in India for Employees: Plan Long Weekends and Leave

A holiday next to a weekend gives you a short break for free. A holiday in the middle of the week needs one or two leave days to become a long break. The tables below show each break for 2026 and 2027 from the central holiday list, with the leave you need. They assume a Saturday and Sunday weekend, so adjust the plan if your office works on Saturdays.

A restricted holiday (RH) is optional, and most orders let you take only a few in a year. Use them where they give the longest break. Your own company calendar and state list may differ, so check them before you book travel.

Quick examples

  • Friday or Monday holiday: you get three days off in a row with no leave. In 2026 this applies to Republic Day (Monday 26 January), Buddha Purnima (Friday 1 May), Muharram (Friday 26 June), Janmashtami (Friday 4 September) and Gandhi Jayanti (Friday 2 October).
  • Tuesday or Thursday holiday: take the Monday or Friday next to it and you get four days off. Guru Nanak’s Birthday falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, so one day of leave on Monday 23 November gives you Saturday to Tuesday.
  • Wednesday holiday: Milad un Nabi falls on Wednesday 26 August 2026 and the restricted holiday Raksha Bandhan follows on Friday 28 August. One leave day on Thursday 27 August gives you Wednesday to Sunday, five days off.
  • Holiday on a weekend: you gain no weekday. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. The restricted holiday Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November turns it into a three day weekend.

In 2027, Holi (Tuesday 23 March) and Good Friday (Friday 26 March) give you Saturday 20 March to Sunday 28 March, nine days off, with two leave days and one restricted holiday.

State Specific Lists of Public Holidays in India

Each state government notifies its own holiday list, and no two lists match. The sections below give the full 2026 lists for Assam, Telangana and Maharashtra. For other states, use the table at the end of this section to find the official page.

How regional lists differ from the central list

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) publishes a 2026 list for its central offices in Karnataka. It keeps 14 of the 17 central gazetted holidays and swaps in three regional days. This shows how a regional list can differ from the Delhi list.
